Selling Domains on Marketplaces: A Seller's Playbook for 2026

Where to list, how to price, and how to maximize exposure across the major domain marketplaces — with commission rates and listing tips.

Where domain sales actually happen

Most aftermarket domain sales happen on a handful of marketplaces. Listing on the right ones — and pricing correctly — is the difference between a domain that sells in months and one that sits for years.

The major marketplaces

Afternic (a GoDaddy company)

The largest distribution network. Listing on Afternic also syndicates your domain to dozens of partner registrars worldwide, massively increasing exposure.

  • Commission: 15–25% (negotiable for high-volume sellers).
  • Best for: Broad exposure, especially .com.
  • Listing format: Buy-now and make-offer.
  • Payout: After transfer, typically 5–7 business days.

Atom (formerly Atom.com)

A curated premium marketplace with strong conversion and a clean buyer experience. Our portfolio is listed here with reduced-commission checkout links.

  • Commission: ~15–25%.
  • Best for: Brandable and premium .com names.
  • Listing format: Buy-now, make-offer, and auction.

Sedo

A global marketplace with the largest international inventory. Strong for ccTLDs and European buyers.

  • Commission: ~15% (negotiable for premium sellers).
  • Best for: Global reach, ccTLDs, premium names.
  • Listing format: Buy-now, make-offer, auction.

Dan.com (a GoDaddy company)

A modern, conversion-optimized landing-page marketplace. Great for building a branded storefront.

  • Commission: ~9–15%.
  • Best for: Direct type-in traffic and branded storefronts.
  • Listing format: Buy-now, make-offer, lease-to-own.

Squadhelp

A crowdsourced naming and marketplace platform. Strong for brandable names with creative buyers.

  • Commission: ~25–35% (includes marketing).
  • Best for: Brandable, invented-word names.

Spaceship

A newer registrar and marketplace with a growing buyer base.

  • Commission: ~10–15%.
  • Best for: Lower commissions on straightforward sales.

How to list for maximum exposure

1. List on a distribution network

Listing on Afternic syndicates your domain to ~30+ partner registrars (including GoDaddy, Name.com, and others). This is the single biggest exposure lever. Listing on Sedo adds international reach.

2. Use a parked landing page

Set the domain's nameservers to a marketplace parking page (Dan.com, Afternic, Atom). A buyer who types the domain sees a for sale page with a buy/offer button. Type-in buyers are the highest-converting traffic.

3. Price it — or accept offers

  • Buy-now listings convert better but require confident pricing.
  • Make-offer listings attract more inquiries but lower-quality offers.
  • Hybrid (buy-now + make-offer) is the best of both — common on Afternic and Atom.

4. Write a strong listing description

A good description includes:

  • The brandable value (what industry it fits).
  • Why it's short, memorable, or keyword-rich.
  • Comparable sales if relevant.
  • Clear extension and transfer terms.

Commission and payout reality

After commission, you keep 75–90% of the sale price. Plan for:

  • 15–25% commission on most marketplaces.
  • 5–7 day payout after transfer completes.
  • Escrow built in — you're protected, but it adds a few days.

The outbound option

Listing passively is the baseline. For premium domains, outbound marketing — finding end-users who'd benefit from the name and reaching out — typically yields 2–5x the price of a passive marketplace sale. Our Outbound tool helps identify buyers and investors for your portfolio.

Common seller mistakes

  • Overpricing — the #1 reason domains don't sell. Price near market, not above it.
  • Listing on one marketplace — multi-listing (with a fast-transfer-enabled registrar) maximizes exposure.
  • No parking page — type-in traffic sees nothing and leaves.
  • Ignoring offers — a lowball is still a lead. Counter professionally.
  • Forgetting renewals — an unsold domain still costs $12/year to hold.

The bottom line

List on Afternic for distribution, Dan or Atom for conversion, and Sedo for global reach. Price near market value, use a parking landing page, and respond to every offer. For premium names, supplement passive listings with targeted outbound.
